In 1957, bartender Ramon “Monchito” Marrero at the Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico was tasked with creating a signature cocktail that captured the flavor of the island. After three months of experimentation, Marrero settled on a delightful concoction that mixed Coco Lopez, pineapple juice, and Puerto Rican rum. This delicious blend was named the Pina Colada, which translates from Spanish as "strained pineapple," a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink.
The Pina Colada was an instant hit and became synonymous with tropical relaxation. In 1978, Puerto Rico declared the Pina Colada its official national drink.
