Literacy is not just being able to read, write and spell it's also about being able to interpret, decode, articulate, comprehend and express their thoughts.

Literacy is the ability to understand and use written language. It involves a range of complex skills including decoding (understanding what words mean), reading fluency (reading fast enough to be able to understand what you’re reading), spelling (putting letters together to make words), writing (putting words on paper), and using texts in different ways such as in speaking or writing.

Literacy allows us to access information on demand from books, computers, phones and other electronic devices. It also enables us to communicate through writing with friends, family members and colleagues. Literacy allows us to develop our critical thinking skills so we can make informed decisions about our health and wellbeing as well as contribute positively to society by participating actively in civic life.
