The Olfactory System is the part of our sensory system used for smelling. Some people can be hypersensitive to smells while others want to sniff everything. The parts of our brain that process smell are called the olfactory bulb and olfactory cortex. The olfactory bulb is part of the limbic system, which is responsible for processing emotions, memories and motivations. The olfactory bulb receives signals from your nose (olfactory receptors) and sends them to the olfactory cortex.

The olfactory cortex processes these signals into conscious experience—when you smell something, you perceive it consciously through this part of your brain. The sense of smell has a direct connection to the amygdala, which is responsible for emotions like fear and anxiety. This means that smells have an emotional impact on us—they can make us feel happy or sad depending on how they smell!
