Description
Pain Scale Keyring
A compact, durable communication aid to help anyone quickly show how much pain they’re in - especially handy during hospital visits, ED triage, GP appointments, physio, or aged-care check-ins when speaking is hard. This set includes a sturdy keychain with clip with five colour-coded discs featuring clear facial expressions so patients can show the level that fits best.
Why it helps
- Improves communication fast: Pain is subjective and tough to describe. Standardised scales (numeric, verbal, visual) are widely used in healthcare because they make pain easier to report and track. Your keyring offers a friendly, portable visual prompt that complements those scales.
- Inclusive & accessible: Visual options support children, non-speaking patients, people with language barriers, cognitive load, or anxiety - so they can self-report pain and be heard.
- Works alongside clinical practice: Clinicians often document pain using tools like the Numerical Rating Scale (0–10), Verbal Descriptor Scale (no/mild/moderate/severe), or VAS line; your keyring can be used as the patient’s visual check-in, while staff record results in their preferred format.
Colour guide (5 levels)
- Green - No pain
- Light Green - Mild pain
- Yellow - Moderate pain
- Orange - Severe pain
- Red - Excruciating pain
Tip for appointments: if a number is required (e.g., “0–10”), ask your clinician how they prefer to map your chosen colour/face to their scale, as services can differ in their conventions.
How to use (30-second routine)
- Point & say: “Which face/colour matches your pain right now?”
- Record: Show the disc to staff; they’ll note it using their system (number/words/line).
- Re-check: Repeat after treatment or rest to track change over time.
