What’s Your Child’s Sensory Hogwarts House?
Does your child love to spin until they fall over? Do they have a sixth sense for noise before you’ve even heard it? Welcome to the enchanted world of Sensory Hogwarts, where everyone is welcome - fidgeters, seekers, avoiders, and all!
Take this magical (and very unofficial) quiz to sort your little witch or wizard into their Sensory House — no Sorting Hat required.
Question 1: When it’s time to focus, your child...
- Is bouncing off the walls like they’ve had a double espresso
- Hides under a blanket and wishes the world would go away
- Needs their chew necklace, fidget, and headphones - stat
- Is calm but zones out and needs a physical nudge to re-engage
Question 2: What’s their favourite kind of sensory input?
- Movement! Jumping, spinning, crashing, rolling - yes please!
- Quiet, dark, and soft - give them a weighted blanket and peace
- Oral or tactile - chewing, squishing, squeezing, or stroking textures
- Deep pressure and heavy work - pushing, pulling, lifting
Question 3: Their sensory kryptonite is...
- Sitting still
- Loud, chaotic environments
- Tags, seams, and scratchy clothes
- Transitions and unexpected changes
Question 4: How do they react to getting dressed?
- They’re doing ninja flips while I chase them with pants
- Clothes are a battle - especially socks, tags, and seams
- They insist on their one favourite outfit and it’s texture-approved
- They’re fine… until the jumper feels “wrong” and the whole day is ruined
Question 5: What’s their reaction to food?
- They want it loud, crunchy, chewy - bring on the sensory snacks!
- They’re picky and overwhelmed by strong smells or new textures
- They like to explore food - with their fingers, face, and sometimes feet
- They eat okay, but hate when food touches on the plate
Question 6: When they’re overwhelmed, they…
- Run, jump, spin or crash - movement is their go-to
- Shut down or hide in a quiet place (under the table, in a blanket fort)
- Chew on things, flap, stim, or get hyper-verbal
- Get moody, rigid, or suddenly need to do something physical
Question 7: What’s their relationship with sound?
- They make ALL the noise and love high-energy music
- Cover their ears at sudden sounds and need things quiet
- Constant hummer, singer, or echo-repeater - they are the soundtrack
- Fine with most sounds but sensitive to certain pitches or chaos
Question 8: What’s their play style?
- Big! Fast! Loud! They love crashing cars and wrestling toys
- Imaginative and solo - they prefer calm, structured activities
- Tactile and curious - slime, sand, paint, and squishies galore
- Likes helping - lifting, tidying, carrying, and feeling useful
Bonus Question: Which magical object would they choose?
- A flying broomstick - speed and motion, please!
B. An invisibility cloak - goodbye, sensory overload
C. A self-stirring potion spoon - it’s soothing to watch
D. A shape-shifting backpack - perfect for heavy things and surprises
Mostly A’s? Welcome to… Gryffindor
The Brave & Bouncy
Your child is bold, energetic, and thrives on vestibular and proprioceptive input. They seek thrill and motion - whether it’s running full speed into a crash mat or swinging so high it defies gravity. They’re movement magicians, but may struggle with sitting still or staying focused without a sensory outlet.
Sensory Toolkit: Trampolines, obstacle courses, animal walks, scooter boards
Motto: “Why walk when you can bounce?”
Mostly B’s? You’re in... Ravenclaw
The Gentle Observers
Your child is thoughtful, introverted, and easily overwhelmed by sensory chaos. They often avoid bright lights, loud noises, and intense social settings. They crave calming, predictable, and low-stimulation environments.
Sensory Toolkit: Noise-cancelling headphones, visual schedules, safe zones
Motto: “Silence is golden, and so is my beanbag chair.”
Mostly C’s? It’s time for... Slytherin
The Clever Regulators
Strategic and resourceful, these kids know exactly what they need and when they need it. Whether it’s chewing to stay calm or fidgeting to focus, they’re often seen as “quirky” - but really, they’re just in tune with their bodies.
Sensory Toolkit: Chewelry, putty, hand fidgets, oral snacks
Motto: “Chew, squeeze, succeed.”
Mostly D’s? Welcome to... Hufflepuff
The Steady Workers
Strong, grounded, and reliable - these kids need deep pressure and heavy work to regulate. They might appear spaced-out or low-energy, but give them some weight to carry or a task to complete, and they’re in their element.
Sensory Toolkit: Weighted vests, resistance bands, carrying tasks, wall push-ups
Motto: “Calm through strength.”
No Wrong House Here!
Every sensory profile is valid, and many kids will be a beautiful blend of houses. This post is all in fun - but it’s also a reminder that understanding our children’s unique sensory needs is the real magic.
And remember: just like at Hogwarts, the most powerful thing you can give your child is understanding, support, and the freedom to be themselves.
